[Just...give him a moment. He leans against the counter, dragging a hand down his face with soft groan and a frown as he tries to wrap his head around...any of it. Why does he always get saddled with shit like this... Worse, why does he always take it on himself to be the one to deal with it?]
[(Because he's always been too soft for his own good, hasn't he?)]
...so we need to think of something to call you. Cripes, I was never good on names...
If it is too much trouble, I do not mind being called "puppet" as I have in the past...
[He saw himself as more of a "thing" than a "person", he didn't quite grasp the whole concept that he was sentient just yet. Regardless, while Nanu mulled it over he looked to the "child" he had been obediently petting without stopping. Clearly his knowledge was faulty and these "cats" were the dominant species.
Which meant that theoretically this cat would know how to eat these sandwiches, so he whispered a question to the cat- though it was a childishy loud whisper.]
Excuse me, can you show me how to eat sandwiches? It is my first time.
[Oh baby boy, if only you knew how right you are about the dominant species here...]
[Nanu opens his mouth to say something to the puppet comment. Closes it again, with another soft and frustrated little noise as he shakes his head instead, looking back at the kid...just in time to hear the very not quiet whisper being directed at the Meowth.]
[...and after a moment, Nanu sighs, and picks up the sandwich he'd made for himself, taking a bite out of it in full view of where the boy could watch and mimic.]
Kanoa seems to be a popular name right now. I know Acerola knows like three of them...
[He watched Nanu take a bite out of the sandwhich, and very slowly and carefully parrots the movements. He paused briefly in the middle of shewing for his eyes to go wide. Experiencing flavor for the first time was a bit of a shocker, but it was quickly followed by him stuffing the sandwich into his face until he looked like a chipmunk.
But a very happy chipmunk at least.]
Kanoa... [said with a very full mouth.] So I'm Kanoa now?
[A very happy chipmunk indeed. And honestly, Nanu can't help the brief laugh that the sight startles out of him, though he regains composure quickly enough after.]
Don't talk with your mouth full. Swallow some of that first before you choke on it.
But...yeah. If you like the name, we can call you that from now on. What do you say, Kanoa?
[There’s a muffled “oops” followed by some cheeky giggling as he chews through his mouthful. He didn’t know why he was laughing, but Nanu was laughed, and that made him laugh!
And he got a name! It was like the swell of excitement he used to get when he felt a little breeze slip through into his room. It was light and tickled his face!]
My name is Kanoa! [And there was another happy laugh. It was almost like he was a person!] I’m Kanoa!
[Alright, there's no stop the laugh that escapes him this time, after seeing just how thrilled the boy is. Maybe he can't even pretend to understand what the kid's been going through, but right now...]
[Right now, he reaches over to ruffle the boy's...to ruffle Kanoa's hair, chuckling softly.]
Glad to hear it, because sandwiches might be all you get out of me for the next day or two. I need to do some shopping...
[Well, he needed to do some shopping anyway, because when Acerola comes down for dinner tomorrow night he knows he really can't feed her sandwiches again... The continued trials of trying to be a responsible guardian...]
[...but he can start making Kanoa another sandwich while he still has all the ingredients out anyway.]
Aether House probably won't have a room available for you tonight, so I'm afraid that you're gonna be stuck here with me a little longer. That okay with you, Kanoa?
[That… made it sound as though he was going to go somewhere else. It made him nervous. He didn’t want to be stored away again, but also he didn’t know how to meet the qualifications to avoid such a fate.]
I like it here, you are very kind, and your children are very soft. I have learned a lot.
[Ah... And it's not hard to see that the idea of staying somewhere else made the kid nervous. Something Nanu instantly feels himself regret, and he reaches over to ruffle the boy's hair again, hoping the motion is as soothing as intended.]
Unfortunately, even if I didn't already have all my other "children" here taking up space like the lazy little freeloaders they are- [And the Meowth in Kanoa's arms makes a noise that might be a smug little kitty laugh.] -this...really isn't the best place for a kid to live. To visit, sure. But not to live.
But you'll be fine, I promise you that. You'll be staying with Acerola, my...well, I guess technically she's my god-daughter. And both of you will still be seeing me everyday, so don't think you're getting rid of me just yet.
But I am a puppet, not a child. I would not take up much space, and I would not require anything like a child would. And I can be strong, I promise I will not cry!
[He held the cat a little tighter in his arms, still careful, but afraid that it too might leave him. He was afraid. He could not fully articulate why, for he didn’t understand his feelings just yet. It was just fear.
Fear and a wish for more days like this.
But perhaps if he was not a child, he would still be sent away for not being human.]
I… I am not sure where I would belong, but I do not want to return to slumbering again…
[It's not a loud "hey". Not angry, or distressed. Just firm enough to get the boy's attention before he could start crying again, or babble himself in back in the same circles they had been, and Nanu gently grabs Kanoa's hand to urge the boy to look at him.]
Listen to me. I'm not sending you away. I don't know what kind of nonsense your mother put into your head, but the rest of us don't discard our children the second they become an inconvenience.
[He paused briefly to try and explain it, or prove what he was. After a moment of looking down at his hands, he gently shifts the Meowth so that he could take off his wrist band, revealing a ball joint. He had some similar remnants of his creation in view, but over the years they had faded due to the curious magics he was made with. Only a few subtle lines remained on his arms and ankles, something that could be easily mistaken for scars.]

My name’s Kanoa!
[Having a name didn’t change what he was, but he still felt very special for it. He was good enough for a name! Like a person!
…or a cat. He was still trying to sort that one out.]
And I like your sandwiches!
[There, two things he’s figured out about himself today! That feels important!]
