[The comment doesn't sound dismissive either, for all that he's no less grumpy than he had been. And given that he's made no secret of being in Alola for research purposes it's perhaps not too unlikely a guess that he had intended to do so, but had forgotten given the various research he has otherwise been occupying himself with.]
I am aware that powerful pokemon can have something of an effect on the local environment. However I would not have expected them to have any meaningful effect on the weather patterns, over an undefined period of time.
[Though he could certainly understand the superstition arising all the same.
As for the Houndoom, once Nanu's hand is near enough that it doesn't have to leave the relative safety of the umbrella it does sniff the offered hand.]
[Urge to pet dog, rising... Thankfully though he just manages to refrain, pulling his hand back once the beast seems to have had a good investigation of him.]
So in short, you didn't actually do your research. [Is that too harsh? Maybe that's too harsh.] Don't feel too bad. You're not the first person to mistake them for your run of the mill Pokemon, and you won't be the last.
[Except okay, maybe he really should stop needling someone who's already clearly frustrated with things. Nanu pushes himself back up to his feet, easy smirk back in place as he shrugs.]
I was mostly joking about the storm. Bulu's a petty bastard, but normally too lazy to single someone out like that.
Come on. You can dry out at the station until this passes.
[It's certainly not something Lahabrea appreciates being accused of (not) doing, at the very least. Not if the scowl he offers is any indication.]
I do not doubt that there are pokemon capable of altering the patterns of weather, be it consistently or as a side-effect of their presence. However, research is not made on the back of folklore. Written records prove better, but even those are often beset by rumor and secondary resources often lose something in being passed from one individual to another even in cases of a genuine sighting. As I would hope most people would be aware.
[Admittedly, he will grant that not everyone is likely to be a scholar as he is. But rumor and hearsay making for poor proof is something that should be reasonably understandable.]
I am willing to believe your Tapus to be more than the average pokemon. I cannot - and will not - believe more than that sight unseen. Not when genuine firsthand records are difficult to come by in my own region, be it written or otherwise.
[Nor is he blind to the fact that those of his own region tend to keep to themselves is both boon and curse - though it means they are largely left to themselves (as most prefer anyway) it means that they are more cut off from the wider world they exist in.
On the other hand, for all that he has been quick to jump to sharp-tongued irritation at the gentle prick to his pride he seems to settle back into sullen grumpiness once Nanu mentions that he'd been mostly joking about the storm, at least. He's still not best pleased, but even with that, he'd be a fool to not take an offer of shelter until the storm passes.]
Lead the way.
[He unbends just enough to offer a brief - and somewhat stiff - nod with the words. Grumpy and easy to rile though he may be, he does have some capability to be polite, when need calls.]
